Il Postino- The Postman- El Cartero
Il Postino: The Postman (ItalianIl postino) is a 1994 Italian film directed by Michael Radford. The film was originally released in the US as The Postman, a straight translation of the Italian title .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_Postino:_The_Postman However, since the release of Kevin Costner's post-apocalyptic film of the same name, the film has gone by the title Il Postino: The Postman.
The film tells a fictional story in which the real life Chilean poet Pablo Neruda forms a relationship with a simple postman who learns to love poetry. It stars Philippe NoiretMassimo Troisi, and Maria Grazia Cucinotta. The screenplay was adapted by Anna Pavignano, Michael Radford, Furio ScarpelliGiacomo Scarpelli, and Massimo Troisi from the novel Ardiente paciencia by Antonio Skármeta. In 1983, Skármeta himself wrote and directed the film Ardiente paciencia (English translation: "Burning Patience"), which he later adapted to the novel of the same name in 1985.
Writer/star Massimo Troisi postponed heart surgery so that he could complete the film. The day after filming was completed, he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Rodan and Malena

Every once in a while a great love story comes along - one that shows the lengths that one one partner will go to in order to maintain the relationship. This is such a story. It is the story of a deeply committed couple, Rodan and Malena.

No distance is too far for Rodan, the lovesick stork.

Making the trip from South Africa to Croatia every spring, the male bird travels 13,000 km to see his beloved female partner, Malena, who is disabled and unable to fly, reports Britain’s Metro.

The loving storks cozy up, mating and raising their new chicks (they have produced 32 offspring so far) and teaching them how to fly. Rodan then departs to spend the winter months in South Africa and returns on exactly the same day, the following spring.

Locals in the small village of Slavonski Brod in Croatia thought crippled Malena would almost certainly die when she was shot by a hunter in 1993, but thanks to the Vokic family, whose roof she lives on and her ever faithful partner, Rodan, she has survived for
over 17 years.

Reunited again last week, Rodan was more eager than ever to see his love, arriving two hours earlier than usual. “It was clear they were pleased to see each other,” said one local to the Romanian Times. Stjepan Vokic added, “He knows he needs to return home because Malena is waiting for him.”

The storks have become so famous in the village that it’s not only Malena that waits anxiously for her partner to return, local residents and reporters gather round to welcome the tired bird home every March.

Let´s read and ask questions!

Brinley Bruton came to our school and we had a great time.  Write down all the questions you wanted to ask her.

Language Assistant Profile: Brinley Bruton
Buenas a todos!
My name is Brinley Bruton and I am one of the English Teaching Assistants this year. I cannot explain my excitement to meet you and help you with your English skills, but most of all, to get to know you and to learn from you! I would describe myself as open, curious, caring, and posi-tive, so I hope you can grow to feel comfortable getting to know me and reaching out to me - even if it’s just to get coffee and practice speaking in English.
I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a state just below New York, and I grew up there living with my mother. Pittsburgh is known for its history as an old working city and for its sports teams. I also grew up visiting my father in Houston, Texas, a state way down south, so I have always considered myself to have more than one home. When I began college at the University of Michigan, there was no doubt that I had gained a third new place to consider my home!
At Michigan I studied Spanish, International Studies, and Community Action & Social Change. Most of my studies focused on Latin America, and I was involved in many organizations as a volunteer where I worked with members of the Latino community. Throughout college I grew very passionate about social justice and Hispanic cultures, and I was very dedicated to finding opportunities to merge these passions! I have always been particularly interested in education, and I have loved tutoring and teaching children and adults in English and in Spanish through-out my time in college.
I have been to Argentina twice before, once in 2013 for a short period and again in 2014 to com-plete an academic semester. I have been to a variety of other countries throughout Latin Ameri-ca as well, including the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Chile, and Vene-zuela. I am so excited to be back in Buenos Aires for a third time and am ready to embrace new experiences with you, the students!
Some of my favorite things are movies, music, singing, dancing, traveling, exploring the city, trying new restaurants and bars, cooking, spending time outdoors, doing exercise and working out, reading, and spending time with friends new and old. I hope I can be not only a useful re-course to you but also a friend. Once again, I am very much looking forward to meeting you!
Saludos,
Brinley

I found love by Owl City
I was so young and reckless
It was all a blur but there you were
And your love left me breathless
When the fairy dust fell over us
Yeah I, I felt I could fly
'Cause I, I found love
So take my hand, and shed a tear
Before i'm gone, it's now or never
I'll hold you close, the end is near
But love goes on, and on forever
It's so dark in my mind
I cross my heart and hope to die
I'm so bad, at goodbyes
I hold my breath, and close my eyes
I don't have a lot left
Oh, how did it end so fast?
I say, with my last breath
It's a perfect day, to float away
When the sparks, flew between us
I saw you glow, and had to know
Where our journey would lead us
Til' the story end, and back again
Yeah I, I felt I could fly
'Cause I, I found love

Frankestein!!! (1818-2018) 200 years!!!

Let´s read the story! (¡Leeamos la historia!)

 Frankestein
The story goes way back to the year 1818.  Mary Shelley was in Italy at that time. One night, Mary Shelley had a particularly memorable dream, a horrifying dream, a real nightmare in which she had a vision of a terrible monster created by using body parts from different people. Mary later wrote that she awoke from the dream in the middle of the night, too scared to go back to sleep and she told herself: “What terrified me, will terrify others”. The next day, she sat down and started to write and in a matter of weeks she had finished the story of that monster. A monster assembled by a crazy doctor named Frankestein.  Frankestein, the book became a 19th century best seller and in the 20th century more than a hundred films were made based on Frankestein. And that is the story of the legendary monster that was born in a dream.

Now, there are different exercises. Choose one of these exercises and do it. (Hay cinco tipos de ejercicios. Elegí uno y hacelo)

1-Answer these questions, please.  (Contestá estas preguntas, por favor)

Have you ever heard of Frankestein?
       Can you mention other monsters?
       Do you like terror movies?
Do you remember any terror story?  Write it down, please.
       Who is Mary Shelley?
-      What´s the doctor´sname?
       What´s the monster´s name?
        How old is the monster?
Why did Mary Shelley decide to write the novel?
When did the book become a best seller?
How many movies were made based on the novel?

3-True or False? Why? (¿Verdadero o Falso? ¿Por qué?) Fijate en el ejemplo. Tenés que justificar las oraciones de la misma manera.
Example: Mary wrote the  story in 1918. False, because she wrote the story in 1818

1-      Mary wrote the story in the 20th century
2-      A lot of people created that horrible monster.
3-      She was taking a nap when she had that terrible dream.
4-      She couldn´t finish the story immediately.  It took her more than three months to finish it.

St. Giuseppe Moscati - Doctor to the Poor

Saint Giuseppe Moscati (July 25, 1880 – April 12, 1927) was an Italian doctorscientific researcher, and university professor noted both for his pioneering work in biochemistry and for his piety.
Moscati remained true to his faith his entire life, taking a vow of chastity and practicing charity in his daily work. He viewed his practice of medical science as a way of alleviating suffering, not as a way of making profits, and would retire regularly for prayer.
He also attended Mass daily, and would sometimes use a patient's faith, as well as the sacraments, in his treatments.
Moscati also refused to charge the poor for their treatment, and was known to sometimes send a patient home with a prescription and a 50-lira note in an envelope
It was claimed even before his death that Moscati was a miracle-worker; some said that he could accurately diagnose and prescribe for any patient merely by hearing a list of his symptoms, and that he was responsible for impossible cures. Reports of his good works continued well after his death, with further reports that he interceded in impossible cases. Consequently, he was beatified by Pope Paul VI on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church on November 16, 1975. Moscati was canonized on October 25, 1987 by Pope John Paul II. His canonization miracle involved the case of a young ironworker dying of leukemia. The young man's mother dreamed of a doctor wearing a white coat, who she identified as Moscati when shown a photograph. Not long after this, her son went into remission and returned to work.
Moscati was the first modern doctor to be canonized; his feast day is November 16

MARIA MONTESSORI-una vita per i bambini-PAOLA CORTELLESI

Italian physician Maria Montessori was a pioneer of theories in early childhood education, which are still implemented in Montessori schools all over the globe.

Maria Montessori was born on August 31, 1870, in the provincial town of Chiaravalle, Italy, to middle-class, well-educated parents. At the time that Montessori was growing up, Italy held conservative values about women's roles. From a young age, she consistently broke out of those proscribed gender limitations.

After the family moved to Rome, when she was 14, Montessori attended classes at a boys' technical institute, where she further developed her aptitude for math and her interest in the sciences—particularly biology.  Facing her father's resistance but armed with her mother's support, Montessori went on to graduate with high honors from the medical school of the University of Rome in 1896. In so doing, Montessori became the first female doctor in Italy.

As a doctor, Montessori chose pediatrics and psychiatry as her specialties. While teaching at her medical-school alma mater, Montessori treated many poor and working-class children who attended the free clinics there. During that time, she observed that intrinsic intelligence was present in children of all socio-economic backgrounds.

In 1907 she was placed in charge of the Casa dei Bambini school. By 1925, more than 1,000 Montessori schools had opened in the United States. By 1940 the Montessori movement had faded, but it was revived in the 1960s. During World War II, Montessori developed Education for Peace in India, and earned two Nobel Peace Prize nominations.

She died May 6, 1952, in Noordwijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

The Betrothed (ItalianI promessi sposi [i proˈmessi ˈspɔːzi]) is an Italian historical novel by Alessandro Manzoni, first published in 1827, in three volumes. It has been called the most famous and widely read novel of the Italian language.
Set in northern Italy in 1628, during the oppressive years of direct Spanish rule, it is sometimes seen as a veiled attack on the Austrian Empire, which controlled the region at the time the novel was written. (The definitive version was published in 1842). It is also noted for the extraordinary description of the plague that struck Milan around 1630.
It deals with a variety of themes, from the cowardly, hypocritical nature of one prelate (Don Abbondio) and the heroic sainthood of other priests (Padre Cristoforo, Federico Borromeo), to the unwavering strength of love (the relationship between Renzo and Lucia, and their struggle to finally meet again and be married), and offers some keen insights into the meanderings of the human mind.
I promessi sposi was made into an opera of the same name by Amilcare Ponchielli  in 1856 and by Errico Petrella   in 1869. There have been many film versions of I promessi sposi, including I Promessi Sposi, 1908. The Betrothed 1941  The Betrothed, 1990,  and Renzo and Lucia, made for television in 2004.
In May 2015, at a weekly general audience at St. Peter's SquarePope Francis asked engaged couples to read the novel for edification before marriage.

Life is Beautiful aka La Vita e' Bella Trailer

Life Is Beautiful (Italian: La vita è bella [la ˈviːta ɛ bˈbɛlla]) is a 1997 Italiantragicomic comedy-drama film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, who co-wrote the film with Vincenzo Cerami.
In 1930 Italy, Guido Orefice is a young Jewish man who is leaving his old life and going to work in the city where his uncle lives. Guido is comical and sharp, making the best from each situation he encounters. He falls in love with a girl Dora. Later he sees her again in the city where she is a teacher. Dora is set to be engaged to a rich but arrogant man, a local government official with whom Guido has some quarrels Guido sets up many "coincidental" incidents to show his interest in Dora. Finally Dora sees Guido's affection and promise and gives in against her better judgement. He steals her from her engagement party on a horse, humiliating her fiancé and mother. By the year 1939 they get married and have a son, Giosuè.
Through the first part, the film depicts the changing political climate in Italy:  . Later during World War II, after Dora and her mother have reconciled, Guido, his Uncle Eliseo, and Giosuè are seized on Giosuè's birthday. They and many other Jews are forced onto a train and taken to a concentration camp. After confronting a guard about her husband and son and being told there is no mistake, Dora volunteers to get on the train in order to be close to her family. However, as men and women are separated in the camp, Dora and Guido never see each other during the internment. Thus, Guido pulls off stunts, such as using the camp's loudspeaker, to send messages, symbolic or literal, to Dora to assure her that he and their son are safe. Eliseo is executed in a gas chamber shortly after their arrival. Giosuè barely avoids being gassed himself as he hates to take baths and showers, and did not follow the other children when they had been ordered to enter the gas chambers.
In the camp, Guido hides their true situation from his son. Guido explains to Giosuè that the camp is a complicated game in which he must perform the tasks Guido gives him. Each of the tasks will earn them points and whoever gets to one thousand points first will win a tank. He tells him that if he cries, complains that he wants his mother, or says that he is hungry, he will lose points, while quiet boys who hide from the camp guards earn extra points. Giosuè is at times reluctant to go along with the game, but Guido convinces him each time to continue on. Guido uses this game to explain features of the concentration camp that would otherwise be frightening for a young child: the guards are mean only because they want the tank for themselves; the dwindling numbers of children (who are being killed in gas chambers) are only hiding in order to score more points than Giosuè so they can win the game. He puts off Giosuè's requests to end the game and return home by convincing him that they are in the lead for the tank, and need only wait a short while before they can return home with their tank.
Despite being surrounded by the misery, sickness, and death at the camp, Giosuè does not question this fiction because of his father's convincing performance and his own innocence. Guido maintains this story right until the end when, in the chaos of shutting down the camp as the Allied forces approach, he tells his son to stay in a box until everybody has left, this being the final competition before the tank is his. As the camp is in chaos Guido goes off to find Dora, but while he is out he is caught by a German soldier. An officer makes the decision to execute Guido. Guido is led off by the soldier to be executed. While he is walking to his death, Guido passes by Giosuè one last time, still in character and playing the game. He winks at Giosuè and Giosuè winks back as Guido is led away to be shot. The next morning, Giosuè emerges from the sweatbox, just as a U.S. Army unit led by a Sherman tank arrives and the camp is liberated. Giosuè is elated and is convinced he has won the game and the prize. The captives in the concentration camp also emerge from hiding. The prisoners travel to safety, accompanied by the Americans. While they are traveling, the soldiers allow Giosuè to ride on the tank with them. Giosuè soon spots Dora in the procession leaving the camp. Giosuè and Dora are reunited and are extremely happy to see each other. In the film, Giosuè is a young boy; however, both the beginning and ending of the film are narrated by an older Giosuè recalling his father's story of sacrifice for his family   https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_vida_es_bella
